Description

BLISS VOLUME I is an introspective, visually striking zine that encapsulates Kelvin Small III’s signature style of surreal photography and thematic storytelling. Created during the challenging and uncertain times of the pandemic, this initial volume delves into the concept of “bliss” as both an elusive pursuit and an emotional state, exploring the tension between moments of profound peace and the chaos that often surrounds them.

Creation During the Pandemic:

BLISS VOLUME I was conceived during a period when the world came to a standstill, forcing individuals into isolation and introspection. For Kelvin, this time was a crucible of creativity and self-reflection. The pandemic’s imposed solitude became a catalyst for deeper exploration into themes of happiness, solitude, and the search for contentment amidst a backdrop of anxiety and global disruption. The images within the zine are infused with the raw emotions experienced during this time—moments of silence, longing, and unexpected joy.

The process of creating the zine was both a personal challenge and an artistic breakthrough. With limited access to traditional photography locations and resources, Kelvin adapted by turning his immediate surroundings into a playground for imaginative compositions. Everyday objects, shadows cast by window blinds, and fleeting moments of natural light became key elements in his storytelling. This resourcefulness highlighted Kelvin’s ability to see beyond the obvious, a hallmark of his surreal photographic style.
